In the midst of the Great Depression, the federal government recalled all gold coins from circulation to be melted into gold bars. As a result, the few gold coin varieties to survive the recall have immense value that goes well beyond the gold content of each individual coin.
The Pre-1933 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle coin is the predecessor to the $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter coin. Both the reverse and obverse designs were altered, and these coins were produced from 1908 until 1929. Unlike its predecessor, only two mints contributed to the production of these coins. The Philadelphia Mint struck coins with no mint mark, while a “D” identified coins from the Denver Mint.
